Into the Woods | 2019 GNSI Members Themed Art Exhibition

Into the Woods 2019 GNSI Members Themed Art Exhibition

If you’re in the Belmont, MA area, stop by Mass Audubon Habitat to see the latest art show by the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators – NE Chapter. The theme of this educational exhibit is “Into the Woods” and depicts the ecological importance of woodlands, including trees and other flora, fauna, and fungi, as well as ecosystem processes and conservation. I guarantee you will not only enjoy the artwork of our members but also learn something important about our environment!

For example, did you know…..

Redwood forests are crucial in providing a healthy, stable climate. Studies show that redwoods capture more carbon dioxide (CO2) from our cars, trucks and power plants than any other tree on Earth. Through the process of photosynthesis, redwood trees transform carbon dioxide – the leading cause of accelerating climate change — into the oxygen we breathe. When redwoods are cut down, burned or degraded by human actions, they release much of their stored carbon back into the atmosphere and they can no longer transform CO2 into the oxygen we breathe. This is a double-whammy for the growing imbalance in the world’s carbon cycle and the climate’s stability.

The exhibit will be on display from October 1st through Oct 29th and the venue includes many beautiful hiking trails. Bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it as the Habitat property is beautiful!

Mass Migrations Exhibit on the Move | Massasoit Community College Akillian Gallery

Mass Migrations Exhibit Opening reception is January 26, 2019, from Noon until 1:30 PM.

Mass migrations take place all over the world, yet when someone mentions mass migration, we are more likely to imagine huge herds of wildebeests and zebra on the plains of Africa than the visitors who come to our own backyards, ponds, rivers, forests and beaches right here in New England. You don’t have to go on a safari halfway around the globe to encounter a migratory species, sometimes you simply have to step out into your own yard. This themed art exhibit is focusing on various species who travel either to or through New England on their annual migratory paths. This theme will bring awareness and attention to the many varied species who visit New England all year round, where they come from, where they go and why.

This themed art exhibit has migrated from its first gallery appearance at the Great Ponds Gallery in the Lakeville Library to the Akillian Gallery at Massasoit Community College in Canton, MA. If you missed the first showing, now is your chance to see it in person.

Akillian Gallery hours:

  • Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 2 PM, or by appointment.

Mass Migrations | GNSI Members Themed Art Exhibition

Exhibit Opening reception is November 17, 2018 from 10:30 AM until 1:30 PM.

This themed art exhibit is open to all GNSI-NE members and any national GNSI member who resides in New England (you do not have to be a New England Chapter member to exhibit). Any traditional media or digital illustrations are welcome. The works do not have to be strictly scientific in nature, they can be more fine art if you desire, so long as they feature a migratory species that meets the theme criteria.
