Luminosity of Leaves Workshop with Carol Schwartz

Explore the beautiful luminosity of leaves during the fall season at Tower Hill Botanical Garden. Students will practice drawing various types of foliage and add stunning fall colors with colored pencils. Other botanical matter such as acorns or seed pods may make guest appearances among the beautiful fall leaves and add to the textures and shapes observed. This is a wonderful way to get to spend some time out in nature exploring and then creatively recording any observations of your discoveries.

Magnificent Mushrooms Workshop with Carol Schwartz

This program will be held in person under an open-sided outdoor canopy tent. Group size will not exceed current state restrictions.

Explore the magnificent mushrooms which can be located throughout the woods at Tower Hill Botanical Garden. Students will be encouraged to sketch the mushrooms as they are found, then to take a photo with your phone. Carol will provide instruction on how to add color, texture, shading and details while sitting in the activities tent. This is a wonderful way to get to spend some time out in nature exploring and then creatively recording any observations of your discoveries.

Munsell Color Theory | How to Mix Colors Not Mud

What is the Munsell Color Theory?

Albert Munsell (1858-1918) an artist, educator, and inventor, developed a numerical system for identifying color using its three properties of hue, value, and chroma.  His groundbreaking work helped to create a whole new way to communicate about color that both scientists and artists use to this day. In this workshop organized by Laurie Bebick, participants will explore the Munsell Color Theory. The focus of the workshop will be to have a better understanding of how to analyze color, thus improving color mixing skills.

Topics covered:

  • Background on Albert Munsell and the Munsell Color Theory
  • Exploring value
  • Exploring hue
  • Exploring chroma
  • Putting it all together with color mixing exercises

Schedule for the day: 

  • 10 AM – 11:15 AM – Background, exploring value and hue
  • 11:15 AM – 11:45 AM – Break
  • 11:45 AM – 1 PM – Exploring chroma and exercises

Participants need to bring:

  • Media and preferred colors of their choice
  • Paper or other surfaces for exercises
  • Brushes, containers, paper towels, etc.

Workshop cost – to be paid at the door: 

  • GNSI-NE members are free
  • Nonmembers cost $10.00.

We will be meeting at the visitor center. Please be aware that GPS may bring you to the opposite end of the sanctuary. The wildlife sanctuary is available for a hike following the workshop if the weather is suitable and anyone wants to get out in nature for a bit of fresh air and nature observation.
